Well, the end of the year is nigh and the latest news just hot off the press is ASSCO has just
had a most successful and enjoyable run on the Wallangarra line to top off another fantastic
‘on track’ year.
Our old stamping ground of Stanthorpe was resurrected again on the timetable as the
starting point and base camp for the scenic Wallangarra line with a big line up of twenty-five
participants from far and wide and thirteen cars eager to shine the rails.
Saturday saw us follow the tourist train out to Wallangarra, and after its departure we dined
in style with a sumptuous smorgasbord lunch at Wallangarra station with some of our
members reminiscing of times past when Wallangarra was once a major rail interchange.
The sound of a 30-class steam whistle from a train arriving on the Great Northern line up
from Sydney or was that a C16 down from Brissy still echoing, with a bit of imagination
thrown in, throughout the station surrounds.
Sunday saw us venture towards Warwick and so traveling on the more interesting section of
the line. Other than a spot of rain it was a momentous day on track with this section having
tunnels, a horseshoe bend and majestic scenery to take in.
Our newly appointed head chef and resident club gastronome, Paul, once again had the
sausage sizzle up and running for Sunday lunch which is proving to be a great hit with
everyone. Rumour has it that the secret to the sausages great taste is the special ‘2t’ oil Paul
uses to cook the sausages in. It is the same good oil that keeps our cars running sweetly so
only the best for man, woman, and machine!
At the end of the run everyone remarked what a great weekend it was on and off track and
how they were looking forward to doing the same run again next year. Tentative plans are in
place to do this run twice next year as it proved extremely popular, and a good local run for
our Brisbane based members. Though no doubt Vic, NSW and FNQ members will also rock
up.
A big thank you to the operations team for this run, Meet Co-ordinator Dylan, Safe Worker
Paul, PO Scott and in addition the continued support of our club members and their well-
maintained cars taken all together ensured another successful and safe run. Well done
everybody!
Finally, 2023 is shaping up to be an extremely exciting year ahead with new trackage
possibilities in the pipeline and some old favourites in the mix.
Wishing everyone a safe and happy Christmas and New Year and we will see you all ‘on
track’ soon.
